Many things about Michigan are common knowledge:  its nickname “The Mitten State”, due to its shape on the map, the Great Lakes, the “hand thing” (Michiganders use their hands as a map to show where they are from), the National Cherry Festival, Shelby roofing at its best and much more.

There are also less known things about this state. Check the list below and learn more.

  • President Ford was a football player at Grand Rapids South High School. He was very good therefore both the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions tried to recruit him.
  • Larry Page, one of Google`s co-founders grew up in Lansing.
  • The Magic Capital of the World is in Michigan. We are talking about the Colon village. The art of MAGIC is a part of this community for a very long time and more than 30 magicians rest in the Lakeside Cemetery.
  • Death penalty has been abolished by the state of Michigan, in 1846. It was the first state that adopted this law.
  • In 1933, Michigan repealed the prohibition of alcohol. Once again, it was the first state to do so.
  • In Michigan, there is the largest Christmas store in the world (the showroom has 96,000 sq. ft.)
  • Lake Superior is the largest lake with freshwater in the world.
  • The first city with a paved road was Detroit.
  • Mackinac Bridge used to be the longer suspension bridge in the world, at the time it was built.
